Could you speak statistician?

Self-assessment · eight questions · two minutes

If you build software for statisticians, epidemiologists or health economists, the requests arrive in their language: intervals, confounders, denominators. Some of it you follow. The rest you guess, and a wrong guess costs a week.

Eight questions place you on the ladder, from building what is asked to reviewing the analysis alongside the people who asked. Answer for how you actually work. Nothing is recorded until you choose to send it.

Rung 1BuilderYou build what analysts ask for. The vocabulary goes past you.
Rung 2ListenerYou follow the words, and you build what they say.
Rung 3QuestionerYou ask the question that saves the week, before you build.
Rung 4CollaboratorYou can review analytical work, and you know where your review stops.
  1. Q1An analyst asks for "the rate, with a 95% interval". What do you build?
  2. Q2"Admissions rose by a fifth at one hospital." Your first thought?
  3. Q3People who use your health app have better outcomes. What does that show?
  4. Q4A figure in your output is challenged. Can you say where it came from?
  5. Q5An analyst needs last March's numbers exactly as published. Can you produce them?
  6. Q6One record in eight has no outcome recorded. What do you do?
  7. Q7The meeting turns to "intention to treat". Where are you?
  8. Q8When do you want a statistician involved?
